Israel Life Saving Federation held the first-ever Bronze Medallion course in Israel in October, granting a group of 32 local volunteers the internationally recognized surf rescue certification. International surf lifesaving expert Doug Hawkins and his son Callum flew to Israel from their home club at Coogee Bay, Australia, especially in order to lead the course.
Participants in the English-Hebrew course ranged in age from 15 to mid-70s and have gone on to teach water safety and surf rescue courses in Israel, as well as volunteer on the water safety teams at some of Israel's premiere open water swimming events, including the first-ever full Iron Man competition in Tiberias.
